Anil Prakash Joshi Biography

Dr. Anil Prakash was born in 1955 in Kotdwar U.P, (Now Uttrakhand, a Himalayan state in Northern Part of India). Dr. Anil Prakash has doctoral degree in ecology, combined with his personal conviction that villagers need to optimize the use of nature's bounty, has formed a marriage of science and entrepreneurship in the organizational plan for his organization Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization.

Anil Prakash has always used his first-hand experience in use of the region's traditional wisdom since he lives among the local people providing them with a realistic sense of how much intervention would be needed to change perceptions about bio-mass use. After three years of teaching botany in a local college, he decided to take his ideas from the laboratory into the field. His father, who is a farmer, continues to be a strong source of encouragement, his wife and son are also part of his mission.

Dr Anil Prakash Joshi's role model has always been Mahatma Gandhi, and he always had a firm faith that to help the common people, one needs to stay with them and stay like them. Anil therefore leads a very simple life with the villagers and knows that his work is far from done, he has yet lot of work left to do. Doctor Anil Prakash Joshi, the great environmentalist works constantly for income generation, natural resource management and rural Development especially for the people of hills of more than 9 mountain states of India.

Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi tries his level best to create economic opportunities and improvement for rural livelihoods by helping rural communities, leverage their natural resources, while, simultaneously, protecting the health of the natural environment. Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi and his organization, Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation (HESCO) cater their approach to address the needs of the specific community of focus, and whatever local resources available at their disposal.

His work is far from acomplished yet he can sit back and be satisfied as an agent of change for his first love, his love for hills. It is not everyone who has the satisfaction of doing something which impacts close to 5 lakh villagers, in more than 10,000 villages, spread across 9 mountain states of the Himalayas. He has a tarhet to work for people of hills consisting of poor farmers and sharecroppers.
