Subhankar Banerjee Biography 
Subhankar Banerjee is an Indian photographic artist, educator and activist. He is also an Arctic Conservationist whose photos of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other Alaskan wild lands made him an internationally acclaimed photographer. His book - Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point was also well received, which addressed the current issues of climate change in the Arctic region. Before he turned active with camera, he worked in scientific fields for six years at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and Boeing in Seattle.
Subhankar Banerjee hails from Berhampore, West Bengal. He completed his engineering studies in India before he moved to US for advanced studies. He completed his Master’s degree in physics and computer science before he started his professional career there. After working Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and Boeing in Seattle for 6 years he later moved to his real passion – photography and something related to nature conservation. Since young he was passionate about photography and was concerned about disappearing indigenous cultures. For the same reason he quit his profession and decided to do something related to this.
He is best known for his efforts on indigenous human rights and land conservation issues in the Arctic and he used different medium for this purpose – through writings, publishing a book as well as photography. He quit his professional job in 2000, and for the next two years he extensively worked as field photographer in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The photos were published in the book, Seasons of Life and Land. He was the first recipient of both Greenleaf Artist Award from the United Nations Environment Programme and Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation.
