Rajendra K. Pachauri Biography

Rajendra K. Pachauri was the chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change from the year 2002. He served as the director general of TERI and the chancellor of TERI University. He also served as the chairman of the governing council of the National Agro Foundation and the chairman of the board of Columbia University’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society. At present he is serving as the head of the Yale’s Climate and Energy Institute. He was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in the year 2007.

Rajendra Kumar Pachauri born 20 August 1940

He was born on 20th August 1940 in Nainital, India. He studied at La Martiniere College in Lucknow and at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Jamalpur in Bihar. He got MS degree in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University at Raleigh in 1972. He received joint Ph. D. in Industrial Engineering and Economics in 1974. He is a strict vegetarian. He started his career with the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi.

 

He worked as an assistant professor and visiting faculty member in the Department of Economics and Business at NC State. He worked as the Visiting Professor of Resource Economics at the College of Mineral and Energy Resources at West Virginia University. After returning back to India, he joined Administrative Staff College of India in Hyderabad and worked there are the senior faculty member from June 1975 to June 1979. Then he became the director of the Consulting and Applied Research Division.

 

He joined TERI as a director in the year 1981 where is still now. He was elected as the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on 20th April 2002. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007 with the former U. S. Vice President Al Gore. Apart from his academic publications, he also writes poetry and fiction. He has published his romantic novel Return to Almora in 2010.

 

He received Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India in January 2001. He received Officer of the Legion of Honor by French Government and NDTV Global Indian of the Year Award for the year 2007. He was appointed as the UNIDO Goodwill Ambassador on 14th July 2008. 

 

On 18 February 2015, Delhi police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Pachauri on allegations of sexual harassment, stalking and criminal intimidation.
