Sunita Narain Biography

Sunita Narain is an Indian environmentalist who was born in the year 1961. She is also a political activist and her goal is the achievement of sustainable development. She is working with the Centre for Science and Environment since 1982 as its director. Also she is the director of Society for Environmental Communications and publisher of the bi-weekly magazine, Down To Earth.


She started her career by writing and researching the India’s Environment reports and studied issues that are related to forest management. She had to travel all over the country for this project and understood the management of natural resources by people. She involved in global environmental issues in the year 1990. She focused on various fields like global democracy to climate changes and needs of local democracy.

 

She delivered the K. R. Narayanan Oration in 2008 on "Why Environmentalism Needs Equity: Learning from the environmentalism of the poor to build our common future". She co-authored the publication of Towards Green Villages in 1989 that advocated the local participatory democracy as the key to achieve sustainable development. In 1991, she co-authored the publication Global Warming in an Unequal World: A case of environmental colonialism. In 1992 she co- authored Towards a Green World: Should environmental management be built on legal conventions or human rights? She also published many other editions like Green Politics: Global Environmental Negotiations, Dying Wisdom: Rise, Fall and Potential of India’s Water Harvesting Systems and Making Water Everybody’s Business: the practice and policy of water harvesting.


She worked hard to study the relationship between environment and development and to create public awareness about the necessity of sustainable development. She is playing an active role in a number of research projects and public campaigns. She received Padma Shri award by Government of India in the year 2005 and received honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Calcutta in 2009.
