Tiruchi Siva Biography

Tiruchi Siva is an Indian politician and parliamentarian from Trichy, Tamil Nadu who currently is a member of Rajya Sabha. He is associated with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He is also an Agriculturist and Social Worker. He has also excelled as an orator and Tamil writer. He mostly writes articles on politics. A prominent leader from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, he has been elected to parliament during 1996, 2002, 2007 and 2014. During Emergency period in the mid-1970s, he has been imprisoned for one year under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act. He was a student leader then. He has stood for transgender people, and has moved a Transgender rights bill in Rajya Sabha for their support.

 

Siva was born on 15 May 1954 in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu. He has prefixed the name of his hometown to his name. He is married to S. Devikarani, and the couple has three children. Siva has been associated with politics since his academic years, and has been imprisoned for one year under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act during Emergency period in 1976. He has been associated with Tamil Nadu regional party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam since his college days.

 

In 1978 he was an organizer for the DMK District Student’s Wing, and during 1982-1992, he served as the Deputy Secretary of the DMK Youth Wing, followed by Secretary position during 1992-2007. Since 1990s he rose to prominence and by 2000s, he became a senior leader of the party. Throughout his political career, he has been a part of several committees as well. Currently a member of Rajya Sabha, he came to spotlight after he moved a bill for protection of third gender's rights in 2016.
