T. S. Venkannaiah Biography

T. S. Venkannaiah was a Kannada writer and educator from Karnataka. His works include translation work of History of Greece in 9 volumes. He was named after his father's elder brother, Talukina Subbanna Venkannaiah, a legendary writer of Kannada literature. Currently he resides in Sringeri. He served as Sringeri Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat president. He has served as principal and faculty at several educational institutions. He has also served as the chief editor of magazines like Bhamathi and monthly Sadguru's Blessings of Harihara Pura Mat, and Seva Sadana of Gubbi Chidambarashram for many years.

 

His primary and secondary education was completed at Shimoga. For higher studies he moved to Mysore. He took MA in Sanskrit from Mysore University in 1963. Before starting his career as a high school teacher in Deshiya Vidyashala the following year, he had a brief stint in magazine works. He worked as sub-editor in Adult Education Council, Mysore for 6 months before joining school teacher job in 1964. He worked in Deshiya Vidyashala for a couple of years and in 1965 he became lecturer in JCBM College in Srigeri where he worked till his retirement in 1999. He retired as principal of the college.

 

Venkannaiah was known both as a writer and an excellent translator. A few of his translated Sanskrit works include - Sri Shankara's Bhajagovindam, Shrividyeya Sarasarvasva by Kavya Kanta Ganapathi Shastri, Guruvamsha Kavya of Sri Kashi Lakshmana Shastri, Bharatiyare ecchara of Sri Dayananda Sarasvati and Upadesha Shatakam of poet Gumani. He has also translated numerous English works like Wildurant's story of civilization, Swami Rutajananda's Practice of meditation and Swami Paramananda's Spiritual healing to Kannada. For his works he was awarded Sahitya Siri by Kannada Sahitya parishat. He died on 13 June 2012 aged 70.
