Syama Prasad Mukherjee Biography

Syama Prasad Mukherjee was an Indian politician who lived in the pre-independent era of the first half of 20th century. He was also a famous barrister and academician, who served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. He was the First Industries and Supplies Minister of independent India. But very soon he had a drift with then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and so he resigned Congress party.

 

He founded the right wing nationalist political party Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951. This party is the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, which currently rules the country. But he was short-lived and he passed away in 1953 following an arrest. Mukherjee's death remains a matter of some controversy, and it was declared by state government of Kashmir as a heart attack. Atal Bihari Vajpayee claimed in 2004 that the arrest of Mukherjee in Jammu & Kashmir was a "Nehru conspiracy".

 

Syama Prasad Mukherjee was born on 6 July 1901 in Kolkata, then a part of Bengal Presidency, British India. His father wAshutosh Mukherjee was a judge of the High Court of Calcutta, who also served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. He was married to Sudha Devi and had 5 children. After studies he enrolled as an advocate in Calcutta High Court in 1924. In 1926 he moved to London to study at Lincoln's Inn. In 1934, at the age of 33, he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, and remained on chair till 1938.

 

Mukherjee started his political career in 1929, and he was associated with Indian National Congress. He entered the Bengal Legislative Council, representing Calcutta University. Since then he has been associated with INC till his fallout with Nehru. He was a prominent leader of Hindu Mahasabha in Bengal.
