Susmit Sen Biography

Susmit Sen is one of the leading jazz acoustic guitar players in India and composer, who was associated with the popular Indian music band, Indian Ocean till 2013. Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty and Amit Kilam were its founding band members and Rahul Ram was also associated with the band. Later in 2013 Rahul Ram was the only founding member who remained in the band. Asheem Chakravarty died in 2009 and two new members, Tuheen Chakravorty and Himanshu Joshi were inducted to the band. Susmit Sen left the band in 2013. The band composed music and performed for some Bollywood movies like Gulaal, Swaraj, Yeh mera India, Mumbai cutting, Black Friday, Hulla, Peelpli live and Satyagraha. Nikhil Rao replaced Susmit Sen as lead guitarist in 2013.

 

He is a self-taught musician. He along with Susmit Sen and Asheem Chakravarty founded India’s one of the first successful rock bands – Indian Oceans in the 1990s which inspired many artists later. He was brought up in Mumbai and Delhi. He schooled at St. Xavier's School, Delhi and completed graduation from Hansraj College. His first guitar was bought by his father for his elder brother. But young Susmit got attracted to it and he learned it himself.

 

He became an integral part of Indian Ocean and his guitar style forms the basis of the band’s sound. He virtually invented a new style to play guitar. He has given the credit of the amalgamation of Indian Classical music with Western rock and jazz. Susmit Sen released his solo debut album Depths of the Ocean in 2011 and it took long 10 years to complete and release this album. He left the group most recently in 2013.
