Sushilkumar Shinde Biography

Sushilkumar Shinde is a politician and member belonging to Indian National Congress. He serves as Minister of Home Affairs in the Manmohan Singh government since 31 July 2012. He is a former Chief Minister of the state of Maharashtra who ruled during the period, 18 January 2003 – 4 November 2004. When Chidambaram took over the charge of Finance minister after Pranab Mukherjee took over the charge of President of India, Shinde was given the charge of Home Affairs. During the period, 29 January 2006 – 31 July 2012 he served as the minister of power in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.

 

Shinde was born on 4 September 1941 at Solapur, Maharashtra. After graduation from his hometown, he completed law from Shivaji University and started his professional career as a bailiff in Solapur sessions court till 1967. He also served as a constable and later sub-inspector in Maharashtra State Police for about 6 years before joining active politics. He won the Maharashtra state assembly elections in 1978, 1980, 1985 and 1990 from Congress ticket. However he lost the election for the post of Vice-President of India in 2002. He has served as a member of Rajya Sabha representing his state during 1992-1998. He was elected to Rajya Sabha for the second time in 2006.

 

He was appointed as the chief minister of Maharashtra from 2003 to 2004 and till January 2006, he served as Governor of Andhra Pradesh too. During his successful political career, he has also invited some controversies too. Once in a speech at Jaipur, he claimed that RSS and BJP promote terrorism through their training camps and accused RSS for some bomb blasts in the recent times.
