Susheela Raman Biography

Energetic and vibrant performer, Susheela Raman is a British musician of Indian origin. She released her first album - Salt Rain in 2001 which got a nomination for the Mercury Prize in 2001. Since 2001 she has released 5 albums - Love Trap (2003), Music for Crocodiles (2005), 331⁄3 (2007), Vel (2011) and the most recent release - Queen Between (2014). She is quite popular with her live performances and kept alive Bhakti and Sufi traditions abroad. Susheela is married to Sam Mills of Real World Records. In 2013, she was featured in a Tamil movie album - Vidiyum Munn composed by Girishh G. The song was "Penne".

 

She was born in Hendon, London in 1973. Both her parents belong to Tamil Nadu who moved to UK in the mid-sixties. But her childhood days were spent in Australia. Since childhood days, she received formal training in Carnatic music and she was brought up in Tamil culture. She was brought up hearing Vedic shlokas and Carnatic music. She has always dreamed to return to her village and used to frequently visit her hometown with her parents. She learnt Carnatic music till 14 and was drawn towards jazz and blues in her teens. She started a music band in Sydney during her teens.

 

She returned back to England in 1997 and continued with her music experiments. It was during this time when she got associated with Sam Mills for the first time and they got married later. Her debut album - Salt Rain in 2001 is described as raga rock, which includes both Indian and western cultures. After that she released 5 albums. The recent album is Queen Between and released on March 2014.
