Surya Kumar Bhuyan Biography

Surya Kumar Bhuyan was a prolific writer and researcher of Assam who was mostly engaged in writings in the first half of 20^th century. Noted writer and scholar Banikanta Kakati and Bhuyan were born in Assam on the same calendar year 1894 and both have given significant contribution to Assamese literature and culture. He was an elected Rajya Sabha member during 1952–53 and has presided over the Asam Sahitya Sabha held in Shillong in 1953. Indian Government honoured him with Padma Shri in 1956. He was a teacher by profession. Bhuyan iniated the attempts to resucitate the buranjis and formulate it.

Bhuyan was born in Fauzdaripatty of Nagaon on 27 January 1894. His primary education was done at hometown and in 1904 he shifted to Shillong, where he continued his studies. He completed his B.A. from the Presidency College, Kolkata in 1909 and M.A in English from the Calcutta University in 1916. Then he started his career as a teacher in Jorhat Mission School. He was appointed as professor of English in the Cotton College in 1918. Later he taught at different colleges and became Principal of the Cotton College, Guwahati. He completed his PhD from England.

His historical research works need special mention. It was Bhuyan who started from where Gait has stopped. He collected manuscripts of many noted works from old traditional homes and institutions and then compiled them to a readable format. With the establishment of DHAS in 1929 his efforts became hugely acknowledged. He also explained the process of editing in the first bulletin of DHAS. Kamrupar Buranji, Deodhai Assam Buranji and Mirjumlar Asom Akramon are among his historical works while Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan and Rajeswar Singha are included in his biography works. He passed away in 1964.
