Gopal Krishna Gokhale Biography

Gopal Krishna Gokhale was an Indian political leader who took part in the Indian Independence Movement. He was one of the leaders of the Indian National Congress and the founder of the Servants of India Society. He also tried to reform the society and followed the principles of non-violence.

He was born on 9th May 1866 in Kothluk in Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra in India. He belonged to a poor family and in spite of that he could get English education. He started his career as a clerk in the British government. He got his graduation from Elphinstone College in 1884 and was exposed to the political thoughts of western world.

He joined Indian National Congress in the year 1889. He joined hands with the leaders of the day like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dadabhai Naoroji, Annie Besant and Bipin Chandra Pal. He was moderate in his political views and tried to convince the British authorities to respect for Indian rights. He visited Ireland in 1894. He became the joint secretary of the Congress party in 1895.

He was elected as the president of Congress in 1905 and he founded the Servants of India Society to expand education to people of India. He had a vision that only if people were education, they would be patriotic and responsible to the country. This society lost its value after the death of Gokhale but still continues to exist.

He gave more importance to the social reforms rather than to the independence of India. He was elected to the legislative council of Bombay in the year 1899 and he was elected to the Council of Governor General of India on 22nd May 1903. In 1909 he served in the Imperial Legislative Council.

He was a mentor to Gandhi and Jinnah. Gandhi calls him his mentor and guide in his autobiography. He died on 19th February 1915. The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics was started in Pune in Maharashtra and run by the R. R. Kale of Servants of India Society.
