Sultan Khan Biography

Sultan Khan is an Indian musician and a singer who is excellent in playing the music instrument Sarangi. He plays Hindustani classical music with that and is one of the members of the Tabla Beat Science together with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. He received Padma Bhushan award from Government of India in 2010.

He was born in 1940. His father is Gulab Khan and he is his first teacher. His son Sabir Khan is one of his students and is also a popular Sarangi player. His first performance was during his age of 11 at the All India Conference.

His international performance was with Ravi Shankar in 1974 Dark Horse World Tour. He won many awards in music that include Sangeet Natya Academy award twice and Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra and American Academy of Artists Award in 1998.

His proud performance was in 1997 at the 50th birthday celebrations of Prince Charles. He is giving lessons on music to his students. He has taught the music composers like Sukshinder Shinda and Ram Gopal Varma to play the musical instrument Sarangi.

He performs Sarangi and performs vocal music too. He has some gandhabandha disciples like Anand yas and Ikram Khan. He also taught Deeyah, the singer of Norway. He contributed to her debut album I Alt Slags Lys in the year 1992.

He performed in the Tamil film Yogi. He played Sarangi for the theme song of the film and for the song Yaarodu Yaaro. In the Hindi film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999 he sang the song, Albela Sajan Aayo Re. He contributed by singing as well as playing Sarangi to the album of Gavin Harrison, Sanity & Gravity.
