Sulochana Chavan Biography

Sulochana Chavan is an Indian folk singer associated with Marathi music. She is known for singing various lavanis and owns many popular songs to her credit. "Solaawa Varees Dhokyacha" and "Kasa Kai Patil Bara Hai Ka?" from the film Sawaal Majha Aika! (1964) and "Tuzhya Usala Laagal Kolha" and "Padarawarti Jartaricha" from film Malhari Martand (1965) are among her most popular film songs. She was honoured with the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2010 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012. Lokshahir Patthe Bapurao Puraskar, Chitrajeevan Gaurav Puraskar, Ram Kadam Puraskar and Lavani Kalavant Puraskaar are among other honours.

 

Sulochana Kadam (maiden name) was born on 13 March 1933 in Maharashtra. She started her career at a very young age, with local dramas as a child artist. She used to play the role of child Krishna in garbas when she was six and seven years. Later she joined Gujarati theatre and worked as a stage actress. She also appeared in several Urdu and Hindi plays, apart from Punjabi and Tamil films. As a singer, her talent was first spotted by makeup artist Dandekar who introduced her to music director Shyambabu Pathak. Since then she started going to V. Shantaram's Rajkamal Studios with her mother to take lessons in singing.

 

Professionally she started her singing career at the age of 11, and has been singing since then. During her early days she was credited with her maiden name. "Naav Gaav Kashyala Pustat?” for the film, Rangalya Raatri Asha was the first lavani she sang for a film. In the films, she mostly sang lavanis and released many singles too. She also gave stage performances. She is also a well-known philanthropist.
