Sukhbir Singh Badal Biography

Sukhbir Singh Badal is an active politician of Sikh political party Shiromani Akali Dal from Punjab. He is the son of Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader, Parkash Singh Badal. Currently Sukhbir serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. His wife is also active in politics and she too belongs to Shiromani Akali Dal party. She is the Member of Parliament of India from Bathinda constituency at present. The couple has 3 children - Anantbir Singh, Harleen Kaur and Gurleen Kaur. Badal is a former Member of Parliament of India where he was elected from Faridkot twice. He was member of the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha and was Union Minister of State for Industry in Second Vajpayee Ministry during 1998 to 1999.

Sukhbir Singh Badal was born on July 9, 1962 in Faridkot as the son of Parkash Singh Badal and Surinder Kaur. His school education was completed at The Lawrence School, Sanawar. Later he took M.A. in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh and Master in Business Adminsitration from California State University, Los Angeles. Once returned he became active in politics. He was elected twice from Faridkot twice and has served as MP. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha during 2001 to 2004. In 2004, he was re-elected from Faridkot for 14th Lok Sabha.

In January 2008, he became the President of Akali Dal and exactly one year later, he became Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab though he was not a member of Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He resigned after 6 months at the completion of period. In 2009, he won the seat at Jalalabad and was appointed as Deputy Chief Minister. Akali Dal-BJP combine secured victory in 2012 Punjab elections and he retained the position of Deputy Chief Minister.
