Sripati Mishra Biography

Sripati Mishra was a politician who served as the 13th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, during 19 July 1982 - 2 August 1984, preceeded by V. P. Singh. He belonged to Indian National Congress. He was senior member of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council, and was among a very few Indian politicians who reached the top slot in the state from village politics. Mishra rose to prominence in the late 1970s, and served as speaker of Vidhan Sabha and state CM in the early 1980s. He then moved to Lok Sabha. He passed away in Lucknow after a prolonged illness. He was 79 when he passed away in 2002.

Sripati Mishra was born into a middle-class family in Sheshpur village in Sultanpur of present day Uttar Pradesh. He was born on 4 December 1923. He was quite involved with village politics during his younger days, and didn’t own any political background or support from prominent UP leaders then. He got elected to Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1980 state elections and served as Vidhan Sabha speaker during this time. He remained as speaker during 7 July 1980 till 18 July 1982, and sworn as the Chief Minister the following day following the resignation of V. P. Singh.

In most cases, no CM has been able to complete 5 year term in UP’s government except UP’s youngest CM Akhilesh Yadav, and Mishra too was not a case of exception. In 1984, he contested Lok Sabha elections and got elected to Parliament. Apart from being a successful politician in both rural and state level politics, he remained an influential local leader too. Pt. Sripati Mishra Degree College in Tawakkalpur Nagara was founded in his memory.
