Sib Chandra Deb Biography

Maharishi Sib Chandra Deb was one of the leading Derozians - the first generation of English-knowing Indians. He was drawn towards Derozio while studying at Hindu college. Sib Chandra was a devoted social worker and has founded many institutions. He founded ‘Konnagar Hotaishini Sava’ and originated Konnagar High School in the year 1852. He established Konnagar Hindu Girls’ School in the year 1860 and founded Free Medical Center in 1883. Konnagar Public Library, Post Office, and Railway Station are other contributions.  He had a great friendship with Maharshi Debendranath, yet supported Kesab Chandra Sen at-last.

 

Shib Chander Deb was born on 20 July 1811 in Bengal. He had joined Hindu College in 1825 and during this time, drawn towards English and Derozio. He earned a scholarship while studying at Hindu college and was a brilliant student then. He occasionally attended the meetings of the Brahmo Sabha also. Afetr studies, he joined the survey department as he was proficient in mathematics and later moved to general administration to become a deputy collector in 1838, 5 years later Britsih started posting Indians in the position. He was one of the earliest Indian administrators who were proficient in English language.

 

He joined the Brahmo Samaj in 1843 and very soon, he became a prominent leader. He established the Medinipur Brahmo Samaj in 1846 and the Konnagar Brahmo Samaj in 1863. He was one of the progressive Bengalis during this time. He became the first President of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, established in 1878. After the second break-up of the Brahmo movement, his home at Konnagar became a destination of newcomers. He strongly propagated women education and wrote a book – Sishupalan for child care. The marriage of Satyapriya Deb, son of Sib Chandra Deb and Saratkumari, daughter of Kalinath Bose, without Hindu tradition and rituals was one of the notable social incidents of that period.
