Gopabandhu Choudhuri Biography

Gopabandhu Choudhuri was a freedom fighter and social activist from the state of Orissa, who lived in the 20th century. His younger brother Nabakrushna Choudhuri was an Indian politician, freedom fighter, social worker and activist, who served as the second chief minister of Odisha. Nabakrushna Choudhuri’s wife Malati Choudhury was also an Indian civil rights and freedom activist and Gandhian. Gopabandhu Choudhuri belonged to the family of Zaminders, who later joined freedom struggle movement, and also influenced his younger brother to join freedom struggle movement and fight for a noble cause.

 

Gopabandhu Choudhuri was born on 8 May 1895 in Khersa, Jagatsinghpur, Orissa. He belonged to a rich Zamindar family, born as the son of Gokulananda Choudhuri. His father was an advocate by profession. Gopabandhu Choudhuri graduated in Mathematics from Presidency College in 1912 and also took Master’s from the same college, two years later. He joined the British Government as a deputy magistrate. However after four years of service he resigned his job to join social work and freedom struggle movement. Gopabandhu Choudhuri took part in the Non-cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience movement, and also supported his younger brother after the loss of their father.

 

He married Ramadevi Choudhury, who was also a freedom fighter and a social reformer. Rama Devi was the niece of Madhusudan Das. They worked together towards the aim of freedom, and continued with their efforts even after India gained it. The couple worked for Bhoodan and Gramdan movement of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, and also travelled by foot for 4000 kilometres across the state to propagate the message of giving land and wealth to the landless and poor. After his death in 1958, his wife continued with the social work.
