S. R. Jangid Biography

S. R. Jangid is a police officer and former DGP in Tamil Nadu. His full name is Sanga Ram Jangid, and was 1985 batch IPS officer. He is best known for his actions and bravery in the Operation Bawaria, to arrest organized dacoity, murder and robbery that were prevalent in residential areas near the National Highway mostly in Tamil Nadu during 1995 – 2006. He was awarded police medal by the President for his efforts in the case. 2017 Tamil film, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru was based on the true events behind Operation Bawaria. His position has been elevated to Director general of police, and he currently lives in Chennai with his wife and son.

S. R. Jangid is an IPS officer, who belonged to 1985 batch. He hails from Rajasthan, and later joined Tamil Nadu police. The notorious Bawaria gang started their operation in Tamil Nadu in 1995, where they committed heinous crimes including killing more than a dozen of people belonging to different places across the highway after robbing their possessions. However the gang went in ‘off’ mode for 3 or 4 years in the late 1990s, when they got arrested and jailed for some other case. Again they resumed their activities, once they got released.

Less attention was given to the case till an MLA named Sudarshanan and his family became victims of Bawaria gang. The operation was launched in January 2005, almost a decade after it actually began, and in those 10 days, police couldn’t get any clue except a few fingerprints. S. R. Jangid selected his own team for the operation, and faced a lot of hardships. He got a major breakthrough in this case, when one of the fingerprints matched with an ex-convict from a jail at North India. With this single lead, the team was able to nab ten Bawaria gang members in various parts of the country along with four trucks used by them.

Oma Bawaria and his team members were arrested by police in Uttar Pradesh, and later they got convicted for the crimes. The gang was involved in about 200 major dacoity cases across the country, and most wanted criminals for 9 Indian states.
