Binny Yanga Biography

Binny Yanga was an Indian social worker from Arunachal Pradesh, who lived during the period, 7 July 1958 – 3 September 2015. She was the founder of Oju Welfare Association (OWA), an NGO based in Arunachal Pradesh. She was also a member of the National Planning Commission of India. For her overall contributions towards the field of social service, she has been honoured with fourth civilian honour Padma Shri by government of India in 2012. Dr. Durga Bai Deshmukh Award, IFFCO Sahakarita Ratna Award, NCDC Award, COSIA Entrepreneur Award and National Tribal Award are a few more honours received by her.

 

Binny Yanga was born in Arunachal Pradesh on 7 July 1958. Her father Binni Jaipu was a political assistant at Lower Subansiri district. Her younger sister Gumri Ringu currently serves as the chairman of Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women. Her school education was completed in Rajasthan. After completing her studies, she started her professional career as a teacher. Since school days she was active in social works, and also started a girls' forum, All Subansiri District Girls Welfare Association back then.

 

She set up an adult education and nursery centre in 1979. Later it became a shelter home for destitute girls. She registered it as a society in 1988, under the name Oju Welfare Association in 1988. Now it offers free education to more than a hundred students belonging to both genders. She was one of the first batch women officers at Arunachal Police Force in 1987. After one year of police service, she resigned the post and fully dedicated her life for social work. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2007. Yet she continued with her social activities. She passed away in 2015.
