Thirumurugan Gandhi Biography

Thirumurugan Gandhi is a human rights activist from Tamil Nadu. He is also a Geo-Political Commentator who founded the May 17 Movement, which campaigned for the rights and justice for the killings of Eelam Tamil for their separate Tamil Eelam initially. It also stands with Ealam Tamil society’s struggles primarily those affected by the last stages of civil war. Gandhi is also a supporter of Anti-nuke protests, who championed Kudankulam Anti-nuke protests. He advocates for the democratic aspirations of Eelam Tamils, Palestinians, Kurds, Catalonia, Kashmiris, Western Saharans and Sikhs. He has been arrested many times for his activities.

 

Thirumurugan Gandhi is known for his support for nations without states, indigenous peoples and communities which have faced war crimes against the imperial forces. Regarding this matter he has spoken at Geneva human rights sessions in the United Nations for the past 3 years. He also represented Tamil civil society in Permanent people’s Tribunal for Sri Lanka in Bremen, Germany in 2013. In 2016 he alleged that BJP led central government has secretly signed Trade facilitation agreement in WTO, which certain suggestions. When Central Government announced to stop subsidies on LPG cylinders from 2018, it made it clear that there was some truth behind Gandhi’s words. However the decision was later cancelled following protests.

 

Viketan magazine revealed secrets about Operation TMG, where central government ordered Tamil Nadu police to kill Gandhi as he is questioning the activities of central government on United Nations Human Rights Sessions. On 29 May 2017, Gandhi along with four others were arrested under Goondas act by Tamil Nadu police, following his attempts to light candles in remembrance of Tamilians who got killed in the civilian war in Sri Lanka, demanding separate state. He got arrested in August 2018 as well. The activist and coordinator of the May 17 Movement, was released on bail from Vellore Central prison after 53 days of imprisonment in 2018.
