Shauna Singh Baldwin Biography

Shauna Singh Baldwin is a Canadian-American novelist of Indian origin. She currently lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She co-authored A Foreign Visitor's Survival Guide to America in 1992. Her other published books include short stories, novels and also a play We Are So Different Now, authored in 2009 but staged for the first time in 2016 by Sawitri Theatre Group in Toronto. Her short story collections include - English Lessons and Other Stories (1996) and We Are Not in Pakistan (2007). Her novels are What the Body Remembers (2000), The Tiger Claw (2004) and The Selector of Souls (2012). Reluctant Rebellions: New is her most recent book published in 2016 and it is a collection of non-fiction works.

 

Shauna Singh Baldwin was born in Montreal, Canada in 1962. She holds an undergraduate degree from Delhi University, an MBA from Marquette University, and an MFA from the University of British Columbia. As a writer she has published fiction, poems, and essays in literary and popular magazines, anthologies, and newspapers. Her works have been translated to 14 different languages. Many of her works have been shortlisted and nominated for literal awards and a few of them won awards as well.

 

Baldwin’s first work of fiction, English Lessons and Other Stories won the 1996 Friends of American Writers Award. Her short story Satya won the 1997 CBC Literary Award. Since then her name is quite popular in international literary circle. Shauna has written three novels since then, all published by Knopf Canada. What the Body Remembers – is among her major works which was a bestseller too. It won Commonwealth Writer’s Prize (Canada and Caribbean). The Selector of Souls received the 2012 Council for Wisconsin Writers Fiction prize.
