Shashibhushan Raychaudhury Biography

Shashibhushan Raychaudhury was a teacher who got associated with revolutionary freedom struggle movement in Bengal. He inspired a lot of his students to join the revolutionary movement. He was one of the initiators of night-school movement and evening classes for adults. He was fondly called Shashida by his students and was quite popular among them indeed.

 

He was born in 1863 in Tegharia near Barrackpore of West Bengal. He was born as the youngest child of a reputed family. While studying at high school, he opened a primary school for kids. Later he started evening classes for adults, one of the earliest initiatives in India of this type. He also linked professions like weaving, agriculture, cottage industry and silk worm growing with his classes. He joined Metropolitan Institution of Kolkata as a student in 1880 for matriculation. It was during this time when the real spark of patriotism generated in him and it happened through his close contact with some of the prominent leaders like Surendranath Banerjea, Reverend Kalicharan Banerjee, Keshub Chunder Sen etc. He plunged into the world of activism and made close contacts with Chittaranjan Das, Pramathanath Mitra and Brahmabandhab Upadhyay.

 

While training for self-defense, he happened to meet Swami Vivekananda who practised wrestling with the Gohas. Vivekananda’s philosophy influenced him a lot. He was fondly called Shashida and was quite popular among students. Shashida and Bagha Jatin together played a major role in the revolutionary movement in Bengal and he was also associated with Alipore Bomb Case, for which their organization got banned. Even after the death of Bagha Jain he continued his efforts to re-organize students for revolutionary activities and many relief activities. He was arrested in 1917 and got released in 1919. He died in 1922.
