Sarbananda Sonowal Biography

Sarbananda Sonowal (born 31 October 1961) is an Indian politician who has been Chief Minister of Assam since 2016. He used to serve as the Union Minister of State-Independent Charge for Sports & Youth Affairs, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship for the newly formed government. He is also a National Executive Member of the BJP. He is an energetic politician from Assam and often referred to as firebrand and dynamic youth politician. He was earlier associated with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) political party before joining BJP. He left the party following controversial IMDT Act and his dissatisfaction with senior members of the party.

He was born on 31 October 1962 in Dinjan, Dibrugarh of Assam. 51-year-old Sarbananda Sonowal is one of the most promising leaders from Assam. He is credited to leading BJP in the state for the general elections in 2014 and also helped the party to win 7 seats out of 4. In the last Lok sabha elections, his party could gain only 4 seats. Soon after taking oath, he promised his efforts to achieve complete seal of Indo-Bangla border to prevent illegal migrants.

He has been active in the state politics since early 1990s. Sonowal was the president of the All Assam Students Union from 1992 to 1999 and was associated with AGP till 2011. He joined AGP in 2001 and got elected to state assembly. He reached Lok Sabha for the first time in 2004 defeating Paban Singh Ghatowar in Dibrugarh from AGP ticket. Following his indifferences with senior leaders he joined BJP in 2011. Following year he was appointed as the President of the state unit of BJP.
