Samarendra Nath Roy Biography

Samarendra Nath Roy was a noted mathematician and applied statistician, whose works were based on US. His father Kali Nath Roy was the editor of ‘The tribune’ daily published from Lahore. He made contributions to multivariate analysis while working at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. His son, Prabir Roy is also a mathematician.

 

His father was Kali Nath Roy who served as the editor of The Tribune, a nationalist daily newspaper published in Lahore. His mother’s name was Suniti Bala and Roy has one younger sibling. While Samarendra Nath was studying at the Khulna District School, Jalianwala Baag Massacre happened and for the news report published in ‘The Tribune’, his father was arrested and sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment. Roy completed Matriculation Examination in1923 and joined the Daulatpur Hindu Academy, affiliated to Kolkata University the same year. In 1925, he passed higher secondary exams with first rank. He completed graduation in mathematics in 1928 and post-graduation in 1931. He submitted a dissertation on the Theory of Relativity.  

 

Then he joined as a Research Associate in the Applied Mathematics Department of Calcutta University as assistant of N R Sen. He was allowed to use the computing facilities in the Indian Statistical Institute, the institute run by P C Mahalanobis. He joined the same institute in 1934 on part-time basis. Very soon, he became the leader of the group and made significant contributions to multivariate analysis. In 1938, he was appointed as a lecturer in the Applied Mathematics Department. Very soon, he climbed up the ladder and served many decorative positions in the department of mathematics.

 

In 1949, he became the visiting professor of Statistics at Columbia University in New York. The following year, he returned and was appointed as the Head of the Department of Statistics in the University of Calcutta. But in 1950, he returned back to US where he took up the profession of teaching, full-time.
