Ruma Guha Thakurta Biography

Ruma Guha Thakurta is an actress and singer from Bengal. She was the first wife of great actor-singer of Indian cinema, Kishore Kumar. They married in the year 1951 and got divorced in 1958. Famous singer of Bengali and Hindi cinema, Amit Kumar is the son of this couple. Her mother, Sati Devi has been an artist in Prithvi theatre and Uday Shankar’s troupe and her younger sister Bijoya Das is the wife of renowned Indian film director Satyajit Ray. She won President's Medal for her performance in Nirjan Saikate in 1963. Soviet Land Nehru Peace Award in the year 1982, Banga Ratna in 2009, and the Bharat Nirman Award from the Government of India are the other honours received by this talented Bengali artist.

She was born in 1934 as Ruma Ghosh in Bengal. She took her formal education at several schools and has also studied in Shantiniketan for a brief period. She was educated first in Loretto, followed by Gokhale School and Sacred Heart School, Lahore. She is one of the earliest child students of Uday Shankar Cultural Centre in Almora before this organization took a good shape. She married famous playback singer cum actor, Kishore Kumar in the year 1951 and singer Amit Kumar was born one year later. The couple divorced in the year 1958. She later married Arup Guha Thakurta and settled in Kolkata. She set up Calcutta Youth Choir with Salil Chowdhury and Satyajit Ray in the year 1958.

As a singer, she has recorded a few Rabindra Sangeet songs aside her former husband, Kishore Kumar. Maya Bono Biharini Harini was one such. Aside Hemant Kumar, her noted work is omar Geeti Jagalo Smriti. She started her acting career as a child artist and has later worked in more than 100 Bengali movies.
