Amit Kumar Ganguly Biography

Amit Kumar Ganguly, shortly known as Amit kumar is the son of legendary singer of yesterdays – Kishore Kumar. Amit Kumar is also a playback singer. Though not as successful as his father, he is also known for his own style and songs. He has sung many Bollywood and regional film songs since the 1970s and was active in the industry till R.D. Burman’s death happened in 1994. He has sung several songs in Bangla, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Assamese, Marathi and Konkani.

Amit Kumar was born on 3rd July, 1952 as the son of Kishore Kumar and the Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta. Music was his passion from early childhood and he used to sing during Durga Pooja festival celebrations. Kishore Kumar had cast Amit as his son in two films produced by him - Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein and Door Ka Raahi. The hit song, Aa chalke tujhe mein dikhlaoo of Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein was pictured on 11 year old Amit kumar that time.

Amit Kumar debut as a singer singing for Kishore Kumar’s movie, Door ka raahi, as a child artist. But the song "Main ik panchi matwaala re" was later removed from the movie. His hit songs during 70’s include – Aati rahenge baharein of Kasme wade, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain of Baalika Vadhu, Sun Chache Bol from Badthi Ka Naam Dadhi, Uthe sabke kadam of Baathom bathom mein and Nazar Lage Na Saathiyo (Des Pardes) in 1978. Bade Achhe Lagte Hain of Baalika Vadhu is still regarded as one among the best songs sung by Amit Kumar till now. This song was named the 26th most popular film song of 1977 by the radio show Binaca Geetmala.  Amit kumar has also sang songs for many musical hits of 70’s like - Aandhi, Aap Ke Deewane, Khatta Meetha, Gol Maal, Des Pardes, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Deewanagi, Duniya Meri Jeb Mein, Parvarish, Humare Tumhare and Baton Baton Mein.

70’s was the glowing era of Kishore Kumar and his magic. Yet his son Amit kumar was able to find his room too. Like R.D.Burman’s significant role in grooming Kishore Kumar’s career, he has given significant attention to Amit’s career too. Majority of Amit kumar hits belong to R.D.Burman and together they have given 170 recorded Hindi film songs. During 80’s and 90’s also he has given numerous hit songs. Many times he resembled his father’s voice and singing style. His hits of 80’s and 90’s are  Roz Roz Ankhon tale of Jeeva, Tirchi topiwale of Tridev, Gali Gali Dhoonda Tujhe from Nasteek, Laila o laila of Kurbani, Yaad aa raha hai of Love story (in fact all songs were sung by him), Ram Kare Allah Kare and Humto Aap Ke Deewane Hai of Aap Ke Deewane, Mana Abhi Tu Kamsin of Jawani and Yeh Bombay shehar haadsoon ka of Haadsa.  Most recently he has sung the song, Nayanom mein sapna of Himmatwala (2013), sung by his father years back.
