He was born on 22 Jan 1892 in a Thakur family of Navada village. He was a good shooter and wrestler since his younger days and got associated with Arya Samaj of Shahjahanpur. He was once arrested along with a few more protesters, when he led a troupe to protest the ban of Indian National Congress Volunteer Corps in Shahjahanpur. He was sentenced for 2 years imprisonment in the Bareilly shooting case during Non-Cooperation Movement of 1921-22. He joined Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil at Arya Samaj soon after his release to take part in the revolutionary freedom struggle of youth. He was assigned the task to train young members with shooting.

During that period, the Hindustan Republican Association found it difficult to fund money for their revolutionary activities. It was Bismil’s suggestion to loot British money from train and carried out the plan successfully. They also decided to loot rich people of the society for this purpose. On 25 December 1924, the house of Baldeo Prasad, a money lender was raided by the revolutionaries of Hindustan Republican Association under the leadership of Singh. He was arrested by British for this and accused him of being an associative of Kakori train robbery, though he was not a part of it.
