Ronu Majumdar Biography

Ronu Majumdar is a famous flautist in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition (Maihar gharana). In 1981, Ronu Majumdar won the first prize at the All India Radio competition and later accumulated numerous awards and acclamations. He has been nominated in Grammy awards in the year 1996 for album Tabula Rasa with Bela Fleck, the American banjo virtuoso. He has associated with Pandit Ravi Shankar in albums like Passages, and Chants of India. Till now, he has released more than 30 music albums. He is popularly called as Ronu.

 

He was born in Varanasi on July 28, 1965. He trained under his father Dr. Bhanu Majumdar. Later he learned vocal music with the late Pt. Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale. It was his guru who diverted his interest to flute and later he was groomed by Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao, a music scholar. Ronu's speciality is the "Shank Bansuri", a 3-foot-long flute designed by himself. In 1981, Ronu Majumdar won the first prize at the All India Radio competition, and the President's Gold Medal. He has received numerous awards and honours among which his Grammy award nomination needs special mention.

 

He has won prestigious Aditya Vikram Birla Award for the year 1999 and Lifetime achievement award on occasion of Jyoti Diwas in 2001. For his creative improvisations, he is popular with younger generations. He has participated in the Festival of India in Moscow and Asiad 1982 in New Delhi. He has given numerous concerts in India as well as abroad. USA, Europe, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East are among those. He is also known for a number of collaborations and jugalbandis with other leading instrumentalists, in India as well as abroad.
