Ramakrishna Hegde Biography

Ramakrishna Hegde was an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka three times and served as the Minister of Commerce and Industry in the Union Government. He was born on 29th August 1926 in Siddarpur in Uttara Kannada in Karnataka. His parents are Mahabaleshwar Hegde and Saraswati Hegde.

 

He studied law and started his career as a lawyer. He took part in the Quit India Movement in the year 1942 and in that time was an active member of the Congress Party. He served as the president of the Congress committee for Uttara Kannada district from 1954 to 1957 and later became the general secretary of Mysore Pradesh Congress Committee. He got his political training during the tenure of S. Nijalingappa and Veerendra Patil. He held many portfolios such as Panchayat Raj, Finance, Excise and Prohibition, Cooperation and Development, Information and Publicity.

 

When Congress split in 1969, he joined Congress (O). Until 1974 he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council. He was arrested along with many other leaders during the Emergency period of 1975. After emergency period, he joined Janata Party and became its general secretary. This party came to power in the 1983 elections in the state of Karnataka. With the support of 18 members of BJP, 6 members of Communist Party of India and CPI (M) and 16 independents he could get two-thirds majority.

 

In 1984 elections, Janata Party could win only 4 out of 28 seats. As per the instructions of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he headed the caretaker government. However in 1985 elections Janata Party could get a good majority and come to power. He was accused of several scams. His son was involved in the scam of taking money for medical seat. He resigned twice from his position of Chief Minister once in February 1986 and again in August 1988.

 

He is the first non-Congress chief minister of Karnataka. He has also acted in many dramas and movies. He married Shakuntala Devi. At his age of 77 he died of poor health on 12th January 2004 in Bangalore.
