Ram Bilas Sharma (politician) Biography

Ram Bilas Sharma is a well-known politician from Haryana belonging to Bhartiya Janata Party. An MLA from Mahendragarh constituency for four terms, he served as state education minister during the period 1996-1999. He won Haryana state assembly elections for the year 2014.


He was born into a poor family of farmers in Rathiwas Village of Mahendragarh in 1949. He had to face a lot of hardships during his childhood days. He used to climb the rocky hills of Rajavaas to reach  school. He completed his education and worked as a Pracharak as well. Later he lived in an ashram to be fully involved in Sangh activities. He took up the job of a night watchman to complete his graduation. Through his revolutionary ideas, he contributed to Darpan newspaper, published during Emergency period in the mid-1970s. He was pivotal in the JP Movement of the state and often targeted by police and politics in those days. He got arrested in 1975 and was one among the leaders who denied the bail after the end of Emergency period. He left jail only after Morarji Desai came to power and he was welcomed like a hero by his natives.


Later he stood as a wall to promote the Sangh’s& Party’s values in the 1980s and 1990s. He got elected from Mahendragarh for the first time in 1982. He was appointed as the National Vice President of Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha in the same year to boost youngsters. He got elected for the second time from the same constituency in 1987, followed by 1991 and 1996. He became state education minister in 1996. He launched DPI scheme in 9 colleges during his tenure as education minister. He also upgraded 127 schools.
