Radhakrishna Hariram Tahiliani Biography

Radhakrishna Hariram Tahiliani, shortly called R. H. Tahiliani, was a Four-Star Admiral in the Indian Navy who served as the 13th Chief of the Naval Staff (1984-1987). A leading Navy officer of the country he has commanded various decorative positions including his charge as the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant (R11). Tahiliani also served as the Governor of Sikkim from 1990 to 1994, following his retirement. He was a founding member of India chapter of Transparency International, and has served as its Chairman too. He passed away on 14 October 2015 aged 85. His son Tarun Tahiliani is a leading fashion designer of the country, best known for bridal colelctions.

 

He was born on 12 May 1930. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy at the age of 20. He later joined the Indian Naval Air Arm and qualified as a pilot for carrier-based aircraft. He was a qualified etst pilot and was the first naval pilot to land an aircraft on the deck of INS Vikrant (R11) in the year 1961. He also served as commanding officer of INS Trishul and INS Vikrant. Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, FOC-IN-C of the Southern Naval Command and Flag Officer Commanding of the Western Fleet (FOCWF) are the major posts he held later.

 

He was first married to Jaswanti Tahiliani, the first lady engineer in Mumbai. The couple had two children - Tarun Tahiliani and Tina Tahiliani. Jaswanti died of cancer when her kids were studying at school. As insisted by Jaswanti before her death, Radhakrishna Hariram Tahiliani later married Meera, a wonderful lady. Jaswanti was almost sure that she won’t survive. Tahiliani retired from the Indian Navy in 1987, and he was a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal for his contributions to Indian Navy.
