R. K. Damodaran Biography

R. K. Damodaran is a Malayalam poet, writer and lyricist of Malayalam cinema. He is also a journalist, who formerly worked with Mathrubhumi from 1982 to 2013, for more than three decades. He has written lyrics for almost 3600 songs, belonging to different genres, apart from songs for about 1000 Malayalam films. Ravivarma Chithrathin, Thalam Thettiya Tharatt, Manjil Chekkerum, Sukham, Chandrakiranathin Chandanamunnum, Thani Thankakkinapponkal, Pakalppoove etc are some of his popular songs. He is a recipient of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Kalasree Award – 2013, Kerala Film Audience Council Award - 2004 & 2005, Malayalam Tele Viewers Association Award – 2000, IPTA Award for the Best National Integration Song – 1992 and many other honours.

 

R. K. Damodaran was born in Kochi in 1953. He graduated in Malayalam from Maharaja’s College, Kochi and also learnt Sanskrit language from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He started his filmy career as a lyricist in the late 1970s. He penned the song "Ravivarma Chithrathin Rathi Bhavame" for the movie ‘Raju Rahim’ released in 1978, marking his debut as a film lyricist. RK has penned 118 film songs in a career spanning to more than 4 decades, and has written songs for legendary composers like  Dakshinamurthy, Devarajan, M. S. Viswanathan, Ilayaraja, Arjunan Master, Johnson, Raveendran etc. He has worked with almost all leading music composers of the contemporary period.

 

He has also learnt Chenda, the musical instrument. He wrote two plays - Poorapparambu and Kannakiyude Mula. He published two poetry collections - "Athunathanam" and "Kadharaavaneeyam", and two collections of devotional songs - "Amme Narayana" and "Aravana Madhuram". He was a selected member of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy during 2001 - 2004. Since 2012 he serves as an executive member of Bharat Bhavan which is under the Department of Culture, government of Kerala.
