Purna Das Baul Biography

Purna Das Baul is a folk singer and musician belonging to Baul tradition. Till now he has travelled in 140 countries, promoting Baul tradition. A living legend of this Bengali tradition, he has received numerous honours and recognitions. His elder son Krishnendu Das Baul has helped and assisted him in his foreign tours to the different parts of the world, and Krishnendu himself is a Baul artist currently settled in Canada. He owns a troupe known by the name ‘Baul Samrat's troupe’ which travels across the globe.

 

Purna Das Baul popularly known as Purna Das Baul Samrat was born in Birbhum district, West Bengal in the year 1933. Ekchakka near Rampurhat is his ancestral village. He was born into a family which performs in Baul tradition for many generations, and he belongs to the 7th generation of artists. His father’s name is Nabini Das Kapha Baul. Purna Das's wife Manju Das Baul is a folk singer and also follows Baul tradition. She is also a musicographer. The couple has three sons of whom Bapi Das Baul is one of the prominent Baul artists of present-day generation. His another son Dibyendu Das Baul has also joined the group, while his third son Krishnendu helps his father with international events.

 

Purna Das was acknowledged as Baul Samrat by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad in 1967. In 1999 he received President's Award from K. R. Narayan. Purna Das has also featured in many films as an artist. He also owns numerous students in Baul tradition. Well known musicologist and vocalist, Selina Sharma is one such student with whom he co-authored a book on the philosophy of the Bauls.
