Pulak Bandyopadhyay Biography

Pulak Bandyopadhyay was a noted musical artist from Bengal. He was known as a lyricist and composer of Bengali films. He has worked with almost all leading singers of the industry including Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Geeta Dutt. This renowned musician committed suicide in 1999, jumping into the Hooghly River. He was 68 then. His songs penned according to situations in films made him a popular artist. He completed 4 decades in his professional career as a writer. O akash prodeep jelo na, Shedin nisheethe borishono sheshe, and O amar chandramallika, Ke prothom kacche eshechhi, Doore doore and kachhe kachhe are among his noted songs and they belong to two generations of music.

 

He was born and brought up in Howrah. He graduated from Scottish Church College, Kolkata. He came from a family that enjoyed the Arts and has been associated with many well-known artists. He entered film world in the era of 1960’s and experimented with his songs throughout 1960’s and 1970’s. He was the most sought lyricist during this period. Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey have sung many of his popular songs. Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar too, own a few popular songs.

 

Kotodin pore ele, ektu bosho, Shedin tomay dekhechhilam and Ogo kajol noyona horini are the beautiful and hit songs sung by Hemant Kumar. O Lolita, oke aaj chole jete bolna, Abar hobe to dekha, Dorodi go and Kothay kothai je raat hoye jai are his popular songs sung by Manna Dey. Though he has contributed a lot to the musical world through words, he wrote only a few words in his suicide note.
