Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi Biography

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian associated with Indian National Congress. He was last time elected from Raiganj of West Bengal in 2004. He is a 5-time parliamentarian. His wife Deepa Dasmunsi is also a politician who served as a Union minister in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. Deepa got active in politics after Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi faced a massive stroke and paralysis in 2008. Priya served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet during 24 May 2004 – 12 October 2008 and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs during 28 May 2004 – 12 October 2008. Currently he is in coma condition for the past eight years or so.

He was born on 13 November 1945 in Chirirbander, Bengal Presidency. His hometown now belongs to Bangladesh. He became active in politics in late 1960s, and served as President of Indian Youth Congress in West Bengal from 1970 to 1971. He contested parliament elections for the first time in 1971 from south Kolkata constituency and got elected to parliament on congress ticket. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the second time in 1984 and was inducted to Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet.

After that two lost two general elections in 1989 and 1991. He bounced back and got elected to Lok Sabha for the next three terms (1996, 1999 and 2004) and also got opportunity to serve as cabinet minister. He suffered a massive stroke and paralysis on 12 October 2008, a few months before the general elections. Though he underwent stem cell therapy, he didn’t recover, and currently in coma state for almost last 8 years. His wife Deepa has to take over his political mantle, and got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 2009 from Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency.
