Prafulla Chaki Biography

Prafulla Chaki was a Bengali revolutionary and freedom fighter associated with the Jugantar group of revolutionaries. He is known for his association with another Bengali revolutionary leader, Khudiram Bose - one of the youngest revolutionaries early in the Indian independence movement whose execution catalyzed Indian revolutionary movements and freedom struggle movement a lot. He was associated with Bose, who was assigned the task of murdering Kingsford, the magistrate of Muzaffarpur, Bihar. In the bomb attack, Kingsford’s daughter was killed and his wife succumbed to her injuries.

 

Chaki was born on 10 December 1888 in the Bihari village of present day Bangladesh. He was dismissed from school for his anti-British activities. Later he joined Rangpur National School and got associated with revolutionary people and “jugantar” group known for violent activities against British. The first task assigned to him was to kill Joseph Fuller, the first Governor of East Bengal and Assam. But he couldn’t succeed.

 

In association with Khudiram Bose, he planned to kill the magistrate of Muzaffarpur, Mr. Kingsford, who was infamous for giving heavy punishments for political workers of Bengal. They observed Kingsford for a short period to collect more details about him. On 30 April, 1908, the duo threw bomb on him in front of the gate of European Club. Unfortunately Magistrate was not present in the carriage and it took the life of his daughter. Two more were shot dead and Bose and Chaki fled. Prafulla escaped to Kolkata by a train. But a traitor Indian Nandalal Banerjee, a sub inspector of police sent a telegram message to the next station, from where Prafulla got caught. Prafulla fired two shots and took away his life.
