Peter G. Marbaniang Biography

Peter G. Marbaniang was an Indian politician from north-east state of Meghalaya. He was a parliamentarian who also served as Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Both his children are into politics, associated with Indian national congress. His daughter Ampareen Lyngdoh currently represents East Shillong Constituency in the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and previously served as state minister for two terms since 2009. His son Robert Garnett Lyngdoh is a former MLA and home minister of Meghalaya.

Peter G. Marbaniang was born on 1 August 1939, Shillong in British India. His birth place now belongs to East Khasi Hills district in the hilly state of Meghalaya. He completed his studies at Guwahati University. He was a member of Indian National Congress. He got into regional politics in the early 1970s before he joined parliament in the late 1980s. He got elected to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1972 and remained as an MLA till 1983. During 1975 to 1983, he also held cabinet power, thus serving as a minister.

Marbaniang represented the Shillong Lok Sabha Constituency of Meghalaya from 1989 to 1996 in the Lok Sabha. Got elected for the first time in 1988, he got re-elected in 1991 assembly elections too. In between, he got elected to state assembly, where he served as speaker for a short period. During his tenure in Lok Sabha he was a member of several committees and Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Canberra. Marbaniang was a member of the All India Catholic Union (AICU) and has held the positions of Vice president and President. He was the president of AICU during 1994-1996. He passed away the following year.
