Penaz Masani Biography

Penaz Masani is a very successful female ghazals singer. Started singing career in the year 1981, Penaz owns more than 20 albums in her credit. Uttar Pradesh government bestowed upon her the title 'Shehzadi Tarunnam’ in 1996. She regularly appeared in Doordarshan music concerts in the 1990s and quite a familiar face on small screen as well. She was honoured with Padmi Shree in 2009 for her overall contributions to the field of music. She lost her mother just 6 days before she received the 
award.


Her dad was the classical musician in the family who hailed from Navsari, a disciple of Ustad Faiyaz Khan. His sister who died at a very young age also was a good singer. So Penaz gives her music inheritance to father’s family. She is a Zoroastrian by belief. Penaz learnt her music lessons from her father. She is a graduate from Mumbai University. She has also done playback singing for leading music directors like Jaidev, R D Burman, Usha Khanna, Nadeem Shravan, Raaj Kamal, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan etc.


Her first album, Aap ki bazm mein was released in 1981 when she was just 12 years old. She sang the ghazals of Mirza Ghalib and Momin Khan Momin since very young. A child prodigy she was encouraged by her parents since then. She became fluent in Urdu at a very young age. She also went to Karachi for a short time to master this language, where she learnt from an Urdu-speaking Pathan. She also learnt Urdu from Nizamuddin Gorekar, a lecturer from St. Xavier’s college. She also learnt from Madhuraniji, who belonged to Faizabad. Jaidev was instrumental in introducing her to her Guru Madhurani. In between she switched on to pop music and became successful as well. ‘Tu dil de de’ composed by Canada-based composer Rehman Rajan marked her pop music entry.
