O. P. Vyas Biography

O. P. Vyas is a lyricist, musician, singer, and poet from Rajasthan. His works are mainly based on Rajasthani language. Through his works, he explores Rajasthani folk music, culture and social life. He also includes Malva region of Madhya Pradesh in his lyrical works. He received the Sangeet Purodha Award for Best Music composition with folk tunes from Rajasthan Sangeet Nadak Academy. His full name is Om Prakash Vyas.

 

O. P. Vyas was born on 4 jan 1938 as the second child of Amarkunwar and Ramchandra vyas in Jodhpur of Rajasthan State. He was exposed to traditional Rajasthani music by his father, who taught its primary lessons. His schooling was done at Sumer Pushtikar high school, Jodhpur. He completed intermediate and became a school teacher. He later decided to study further and completed Graduation in Arts from Rajputana University. During this time, he used to participate in cultural art festivals. He used to perform in patriotic songs and folk songs of Rajasthan. After graduation, he moved to Mumbai for higher studies in art, where he joined J. J. School of Arts. For a brief period, he worked as assistant director in Mumbai and returned back.

 

He restarted his teaching job. In 1972, he held a musical night at Jodhpur. In 1973, he composed music of a movie, Meera bai. But the movie was not released. Next year, he composed music for a Hindi movie, Trishla ka lal. Again the movie was not completed! In 1974, Filmi Duniya Filmy Log was released. In 1975, gramophone company H.M.V recorded his songs for the first time. In 1977, Vyas launched his own music company, Sunrise Records. During 1980’s, regarded as the golden period of Rajasthani music, he composed many golden tunes.
