Nirmal Singh (haryana) Biography

Nirmal Singh is an Indian politician from Haryana. This senior leader is associated with Indian National Congress. A senior Congress leader within state politics, he has been elected as MLA to state legislative assembly 4 times from Naggal constituency (1982, 1991, 1996 and 2005). He served as Ministry of Revenue, PWD and Animal Husbandry during his tenure as MLA. Well-known professional golf player, Digvijay Singh (sister of Bollywood actress Chitrangada Singh) is his son-in-law.

 

Nirmal Singh, fondly addressed as ‘Pradhan Ji’, hails from Haryana. He was born in Ambala Cantt in 1953. He got involved with politics through Indian national Congress, and after the demise of Sanjay Gandhi, Nirmal worked closely with Sanjay’s sibling Rajiv Gandhi, who had just got into politics then. In 1976 he was appointed Block Youth Congress President. From there on, he moved to many prominent positions within the party state politics, and reached till the position of an MLA and minister. He served as President State Youth Congress for long 7 years in the 1980s.

 

In 1982, he became the youngest person to be elected as MLA from Naggal Constituency in Haryana. He was 29 years old then. In 1986 he became the youngest minister in Haryana Cabinet, and he was assigned two different portfolios. He was only 33 then. From there on, he rose to prominence within the state politics. He has been elected MLA 4 times from Naggal constituency, and served as minister multiple times under Congress led government.

 

In 1994 he was accused of a murder, which gave a setback to his political journey. He resigned from his position as Minister of State for Revenue. He had to spent 2.5 years in jail without bail, pending trial. He contested 1996 elections behind bar as an independent candidate and made a historic win with huge majority. He was acquitted of all charges in February, 1997 and he re-joined Congress in 1999.
