Nilima Sen Biography

Nilima Sen was a famous singer from Bengal, an expertise in Rabindra sangeet. She lived during the period 1928–1996. Nilima Gupta is her maiden name and she owns numerous music concerts to her credit. In 2005 sa re ga ma pa music released a compilation album of Nilima Sen which included best of her 21 songs. The music company also released a few of her popular singles one year prior to it. "Khelar Saathi, Bidaydwar", "Raja", "Tomari Madhur Rupe Bhorechho Bhuban" and "Tumi Bandhu Tumi Nath” are among those popular singles. All these works were released posthumously.  She is the co-founder of the music school – Surangama.

 

She was born in Kolkata on April 28, 1928. At the age of 6 she moved to Shantiniketan along with her parents, where she completed the diploma course in Classical Music & Rabindra Sangeet. She received guidance under Sailajaranjan Mazumder. She also completed graduation from Visva-Bharati University at Shantiniketan. She got opportunity to work as a stage actress under the direct guidance of Tagore, though the play was not staged. She has exhibited her talents as a budding singer before many nationalist leaders. Along with Prasad Sen, she started a music school and also worked as faculty in Sangeet Bhavan.

 

She regularly performed in All India Radio. Some of her popular renditions are Bajao re mohan banshi, Aha tomar sange, Chokher jaler laglo joar etc. She also released a few music albums on Rabindra Sangeet. Apart from India she has also performed across the globe, popularizing this music form. She died in 1996 after a prolonged illness. Swastika Mukhopadhyay, Lily Islam, Basabi Datta etc are among her famous disciples.
