Nazia Hassan Biography

Nazia Hassan was an iconic pop singer of Pakistan during 80’s. She died at a young age of 35 due to lung cancer in the year 2000. Her voice has created great waves in Bollywood music as well, during 1980’s and her songs, though few have been trend settlers and chartbusters. She is the youngest receiver of Filmfare awards of India when she achieved it at the age of 15. She was the first Pakistani singer to win Indian Filmfare award too. The song was her debut song of Bollywood, Aap jaisa koi of Qurbani (1980), a song for which she is still loved by millions of fans. This single song created ‘Disco waves’ in India and stayed there till middle 1980’s. Though Kalyanji Anandji were the composers of the songs of Qurbani, this single track was composed by Biddu with whom Nazia Hassan has collaborated later too, to add songs like Disco deewane and Boom boom. She was even offered Made in India song by Biddoo. But she refused it stating that it may harm the feelings of Pakistanis. She is a recipient for the Pride of Performance (highest civilian award of Pakistan), Double Platinum Award and Golden Discs Awards.

 

‘Aap jaisa koi’ was the debut song of Nazia to singing field. Earlier she has sung songs as a child artist on PTV. This single song caught eyes of Indians and Pakistanis and it made her a legend. Not only that, she was made an icon all over South Asia. Her first private album was Disco Deewane released in the following year. It was charted in fourteen countries worldwide and became the best-selling Asian pop record up until that time.  Her association with her brother Zohaib Hassan proved successful and the album sold 60 million records.

 

Her beautiful and innocent looks were often compared with Princess Diana. She has been offered roles for acting post Qurbani success. Yet she wanted to continue as a singer only. She has appeared on television and used to perform worldwide. Her marriage was not successful. She was married to Mirza Ishtiaq Baig but they divorced ten days before her death.
