Mukesh Biography

Mukesh was an Indian playback singer of Hindi film industry. His contributions are remembered to date. He had received National Film Award for his song Kain Baar Yoon Bhi Dekhaa Hai in the film Rajnigandha. He had also won Filmfare Best Male Playback Award four times and was nominated for the same for ten times.

He was born on 22nd July 1923 Ludhiana in Punjab in Kayastha family. His parents are Zorawar Chand Mathur and Chand Rani. When music was taught to his sister, Sundar Pyari, he started to learn from a hidden place. He stopped his education after finishing 10th grade and worked in the Department of Public Works. He married Sarla Trivedi Raichand alias Bachhiben in Kadhiwali in 1946. She was the daughter of a Gujarati Brahmin millionaire and as he did not have proper house and income, they were forced to elope. However they survived all the hardships and had five children, Rita, Nitin, Nalini, Mohnish and Namrata.

He slowly developed his singing abilities and sang songs like Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye, and Maine Tere Liye Hi Saat Rang Ke Sapne Chune in the movie Anand in 1970. He sang at his sister’s wedding. His distant relative Motilal took him to Bombay and joined him as a student under Pandit Jagannath Prasad. In this period, Mukesh was given a role in the Hindi Film, Nirdosh. He sang his first song, Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To as an actor singer. The film Pehli Nazar gave him the break. The song that he sang for this film was Dil Jalta Hai To Jalna De.

He received National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the film Rajnigandha and the song Kain Baar Yoon Bhi Dekha Hai in 1974. He received Filmfare Best Male Playback Award four times, in 1959 for the film Anari for the song Subhkuchh, in 1970 for the film Pehchan for the song Sabse Bada Naandan, in 1972 for the film Beimaan for the song Jai Bolo Beiman Ki, and in 1976 for the film Kabhi Kabhie for the song Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein. He died of heart attack on 27th August 1976 in Detroit in Michigan in USA. He had gone there for a music concert and his body was flown to India.
