Mitali Mukherjee (singer) Biography

Mitali Mukherjee is a ghazal, classical, modern and playback singer, and the wife of legendary Indian Ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh since 1983. She is of Bangladeshi origin, and has released several albums with her husband and they together performed for live shows as well. Since the first phase of their career together, they have released a series of albums such as Aarzoo, Chandani Raat, Gulmohar, Ghazal Ke Phool, Ek Arzoo etc which remained immensely successful. They together established as one of themost successful ghazal singing pairs in India. Currently she is settled in Mumbai with her husband.

Mitali was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Amulya Kumar Mukherjee and Kalyani Mukherjee are her parents. Her parents were well-versed in classical and Nazrul Sangeet and groomed her in music. She took formal training in classical music from Pandit Mithun Dey, and later she received a scholarship from the Indian Government to study music at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. She released her first album with HMV titled "Saahil". She got married to Ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh in 1983 and settled in India.

Apart from her long-term association with her husband in the profession of music, her association with lyricist Gulzar is also well-known. They worked together for her album "Chand Parosa Hai". As a playback singer too, she has also sang some memorable songs, though a few in number. The timeless song “Ei Dunia Ekhon To Ar” for the film “Dui Poishar Alta”(1981) earned her Bangladesh national award for best playback singer, and the song took industry by storm. She has also sung songs for Punjabi, Gujarati and Tamil language films. She was honoured with “Gaan-e Gaan-e Gunijon Sangbordhona” by government of Bangladesh.
