Mathukumalli Vidyasagar Biography

Mathukumalli Vidyasagar is a leading mathematician from Andhra Pradesh, who specializes on Control theory. He is one of the leading mathematicians and a globally recognized control theorist. He is a Fellow of Royal Society, and a renowned professor of his subject. He currently serves as the Professor in Electrical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad, and has been associated with many leading colleges and universities before. He is the son of eminent mathematician M V Subbarao, specialising in number theory and known for his research works on congruence properties of the partition function, special classes of divisors etc. His father was settled in Canada towards the end of his life where he was busy with his teaching profession and research works. In 2012 he was honoured with Rufus Oldenburger Medal.

 

Dr. Mathukumalli Vidyasagar was born on 29 September 1947 in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Born into the family of mathematician, he followed his father’s legacy, and worked in Canada before he moved back to india. He did his early education in India. Later he went to the University of Wisconsin and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering by age 17. At the age of 21 he completed his doctorate. By the age 35, he received Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers fellowship for “contributions to the stability analysis of linear and nonlinear distributed systems.” Thomas J. Higgins was his advisor for doctoral studies.

 

He owns some distinct traits as a researcher. He used to concentrate on to a single area or subject at a time. After completing that work, he authored a book about it, and then move to a different aspect of control problems at the forefront of the field. He began his professional career as a lecturer at Concordia University in Montreal, and has also taught at University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada. Later he became the executive vice president of Tata Consultancy Services, and managed a team of 80 engineers and scientists working on advanced encryption methods, open-source software, quantitative finance and bioinformatics. He retired from the company in 2009 and joined UT Dallas to establish the Bioengineering Department.
