Mashkoor Ali Khan Biography

Mashkoor Ali Khan is a Hindustani vocalist who follows Kirana Gharana of singing. He is the grandson of Abdul Karim Khan, a founder of the Kirana style, and has numerous disciples who he trained with the same tradition. Sunali Rathod and Sanhita Nandi are among his noted disciples. He has trained his nephews - his nephews Amjad Ali Khan and Arshad Ali Khan also, apart from his daughter and many more students. Sanhita Nandi still learns under him. Khan is an A-grade artist with All India Radio, and currently serves as a senior music teacher at ITC Sangeet Research Academy.

 

Mashkoor Ali Khan belongs to a family with strong musical background, for many years. Many of his forefathers are legends of Kirana Gharana, a style of singing formulated by some members of his family. He is the grandson of Abdul Karim Khan and grandnephew of Abdul Wahid Khan - the founders of the Kirana Gharana, and young Mashkoor inherited the music talents from both. His nephews Amjad Ali Khan and Arshad Ali Khan inherited music talents from him. His daughter Shahana Ali Khan also learns under him. Thus the next generation has also inherited music.

 

As a vocalist, he has collaborated with many Indian artists apart from internationally acclaimed artists like Michael Harrison. Mashkoor Ali Khan is a recipient of numerous honours including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2015, 'Abhinav Kala Sammelan' (1993), the 'Master Dinanath Mangeshkar' (1994), the 'Swaranjali' (1997), the 'Best Vocalist Award' by the Bharatiya Sanskriti Samsad (1990), 'Sangeet Ratna' in 2002 and many more.

 

The direct descendant of the great Abdul Karim Khan and Abdul Wahid Khan, the founders of the famous Kirana lineage, his father Shakoor Khan was a Sarangi player and the grandnephew of Bande Ali, Beenkar. Mashkoor was initiated into music and trained by his father for fifteen years, and helped him to secure a place in the world of music.
