Manish Tewari Biography

Manish Tewari is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian who served as a cabinet minister of Manmohan Singh. He served as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting during the period 28 October 2012 – 26 May 2014. He is a lawyer by qualification, and has practised in the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court. He was elected to parliament from Ludhiana constituency in 2009 representing Indian national congress and he has served as national spokesman of Indian National Congress. Since 2004 he serves as the secretary of All India Congress Committee. Earlier he served as the President of Indian Youth Congress from 1998 to 2000.

He was born in 1965 into a politically affluent family in Punjab. His father Dr. V.N. Tiwari was a noted Punjabi author and professor. He also served as a parliamentarian, but was killed in 1984 by suspected militants. His mother Dr. Amrit Kaur Tewari is a Dentist. His maternal grandfather, Sardar Tirath Singh has also served as a minister of Punjab, associated with Indian National Congress. He is married to Naaznin Shafa and the couple has one daughter. Tewari was quite active in student’s politics since his college days. He served as the president of National Students Union of India 1989.

Tewari is a prominent lawyer who has practised in the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court. He commenced Legal Practice in 1992. He founded the Law Firm, M/s. Tewari Gogia & Associates in 1995 in Delhi, which is now known as M/s. Tewari & Associates. He contested for the first time in 2004 Lok sabha elections, but was defeated by Shiromani Akali Dal's candidate Gurcharan Singh Galib by a huge margin of 1 lakh votes. Tewari has been associated with sports in his younger days and Swimming, Tennis and Squash are his prime interests.
