Malati Ghoshal Biography

Malati Ghoshal was a well-established singer from Bengal associated with Rabindra Sangeet. She is the daughter of the leading businessman of early 1990s, Hemendra Mohan Bose who fully dominated perfume industry in India. Her association with Rabindra sangeet genre of music began only after her marriage with singer Sushanta Ghoshal in 1935. Earlier she has done musical lessons. She was a known figure in private soirees and Brahmo ceremonies. Her brother Nitin Bose was a very famous film director associated with Bengali cinema. Though she has released only 4 Tagore songs, they were sufficient to make Malati a popular artist of mid-20th century.

 

She was born on 17 December 1902 in West Bengal. Kolkata is her hometown. She was born into a wealthy family of Kolkata, where her father Hemendra Mohan Bose was a leading businessman and entrepreneur. She had 4 siblings, and she was the youngest. Her father was a close friend of Rabindranath Tagore. Years later, Malati turned a well-established female voice of Rabindra Sangeet.

 

Before her marriage with the noted singer, Sushanta Ghoshal in 1935, she learnt Tappa and Kirtan apart from Indian classical music. She also played sitar, the musical instrument. Yet her musical career flourished only after marriage. She got married at the age of 33, and had one daughter in this wedlock. In private functions and religious ceremonies, she became a well noted singer. She used to sing duets with her husband too. Her first gramophone record was released in 1940. It contained two Tagore Songs, "Ke Bosile Aji" and "Hridayo Basona Purno Holo".

 

Her second gramophone record released also contained two Tagore songs - "E Parabase Rabe Ke" and "Jodi E Amaro Hridayo Duaro". The record was released in 1952. It was her second and final one too. She completely gave up singing after the demise of her husband in 1952. But these four Tagore songs made her an immensely popular singer of her times.
