Maghfoor Ahmad Ajazi Biography

Maghfoor Ahmad Ajazi was an Indian political activist and freedom fighter from Bihar, best known for his works in the pre-independent era. He was the Founder of All-India Jamhur Muslim League & Flag bearer for the cause of Urdu Language. Ajazi was also a poet and writer in the Urdu language and an orator. He founded the All-India Jamhur Muslim League to counter Jinnah's All-India Muslim League, and served as its first General Secretary. He had to face the wrath from workers of Jinnah's Muslim league for opposing division of Motherland. He was in forefront of India's struggle for independence, best known as a political activist. After independence, he dedicated his whole time for the development of the Urdu language.

 

Ajazi was born in village Dihuli of District Muzaffarpur, in Bihar on 3 March 1900. He was born into a family of rich zamindars. Moulvi Hafizuddin Husain and Mahfoozunnisa were his parents. He received initial religious teachings from a madrassa. Later he schooled from North Brooke Zila School, Darbhanga. While at school he was expelled for opposing the Rowlatt Act. He completed matriculation from Pusa High School, and enrolled from B.N. College, Patna. He married Azizul Fatima. He was a supporter of Gandhi and his principles, and during the marriage, the bride and groom wore Khadi dress. He boycotted and burned English dress, taking inspirations from Gandhi’s words. He was a great patriot also, and learnt lessons of patriotism from his father.

 

While at B. N. College, he left studies and joined the non-co-operation movement in 1921. Since then he actively participated in freedom struggle movement. He mobilised masses against the British by organising volunteer corps and other active organisations. He was against the separation of the country based on religion. He even faced wrath from the supporters of Jinnah. Muslim League workers used to come in batches at his residence and shouted slogan"Dr.Ajazi-Ghaddar-e-Qaum which literally translates as ‘Dr.Ajazi-anti Muslim’. He was called "Baba-e-Urdu, Bihar" by famous journalists Kalam Haidry & Moin Shahid.
